Sterling made substantial gains yesterday, hitting a session high of €1.1253 rising from the day’s earlier low of €1.1163 which is its highest level in nearly a month; it also rose against a weaker dollar to $1.6409 against the day’s low of $1.6233. (more…)

Yesterday saw sterling strengthen slightly against the dollar during a fairly uneventful trading day. Against the euro it finished the session on a par with the morning open price, falling temporarily around lunchtime.

Short Lived Gains for Sterling

Yesterday morning saw sterling make gains against the euro and dollar but they were short lived as concerns over Britain’s fiscal position and long term low interest rates carrying well into next year haunted the potently high yielding asset, interest rate rises by the Bank of England will be the key to a sustained growth in the value of the pound.

Sterling falls due to pre budget speech

Sterling fell sharply against the euro and dollar yesterday following the Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling’s pre budget speech where he told parliament the UK would have to borrow more money and he also cut the 2009 forecast for the economy. The pound was down against 12 of the 16 most traded currencies as a result of comments made by Darling which included the government borrowing deficit will need to be increased by £5bn within the next four years.

Worries Over Fiscal Postion in The Uk Weighed on the £

Yesterday morning saw Sterling weaken, as worries over the fiscal position in the UK weighed on the pound.  This comes as we await Alistair Darling’s pre budget report, released today at 12.30pm.  The worry is that back in April the forecast for Government borrowing was estimated to reach 175bil, this forecast looks likely to be raised as the recession has been deeper than previously expected.

Sterling falls slightly in the morning

Yesterday, sterling dropped to its lowest level in 10 days against the US dollar as banking sector concerns and UK fiscal policy weighed down on investors. The dollar has been on the front foot since last week’s non farm payrolls came in significantly better than expected leading the market to believe that US interest rates could start to increase before previously thought.

The pound is under pressure ahead of Wednesday’s pre budget report which is likely to show the UK is carrying an ever increasing amount of debt as the treasury and Bank of England plough money into the economy to assist in recovery. The concerns about Dubai are still there although these are beginning to subside slightly as the dust begins to settle.
